Plant Characteristics
Life Cycle: Low-growing medium sized
shrub usually under 3 feet tall. Flowers in January and February
with yellow, daisy like flowers. Produces seeds by May.
Visual Appearance: Small leaves are about 1 inch long. Each leaf is divided into 3
to 5 narrow lobes, which look like tiny turkey tracks. Shrub sheds
its leaves during dry seasons and blooms in late winter to early
spring. Hundreds of small, daisy-like inflorescences may hide any
green leaves.
Habitat
In
Arizona, the bush occurs primarily below the Mogollen Rim and may
not be able to the survive the colder climates in northern
Arizona. Prefers semi-arid grasslands.
Control Measures
Mechanical and Cultural:
Mowing to reduce plant size and to stress the plant followed by
herbicide treatment while the plant is actively growing.
Biological:
None
Chemical: Spike pellets at 10 lbs/ac and Pronone
10G at 25 lbs/ac can cause 50-100% plant death.
Other Points of Interest
Introduced
to Arizona in the 1930s to provide livestock forage (animals will
not eat it) and to control erosion. The shrub emits a sweet, but
disagreeable odor from the flowers and the drops of resin exuded
by the woody stems.
