Pavement Design ~ Mission Statement
|
The mission of
the ADOT Materials Group Pavement Design Section team is to design
pavement structures as part of the project management process for all
state highway paving projects including interstate, non interstate and
the MAG Freeway system. Additionally, the team reviews and approves the
pavement design for federal and aid local government paving projects.
Also, the team provides pavement design consultation during
construction when requested to do so and actively participates in
project partnering. The team's overall mission is to enhance the
state's investment in its highways by providing high quality, durable
pavements that meet the needs of our customers.

Authority |
The Pavement Design Section is directed by the Pavement Section Engineer under the
authority delegated by the Assistant State Engineer, Materials Group.

Responsibilities
|
The following responsibilities are assigned to the Pavement Design Section:
- Provide Pavement Designs and a Materials Design Report for all assigned projects, Generally 100+ projects per year.
- Review Consultant Pavement Designs and provide timely comments, generally bout 20 projects per year.
- Review Local Government Federal aid Pavement Design, Rest Area and State Park projects.
- Provide comments in a timely manner for about 20 projects per year.
- Maintain the Materials Preliminary Engineering and Design Guide. This
Guide provides the Technical Basis for Pavement Designs and reflects
various Geotechnical and Materials policies and procedures with regard
to design.
- Provide various summary documents that reflect the status of special
pavement designs such as asphalt rubber, SHRP experimental sections and
SHRP gyratory projects.
- Review all project assessments (PA's) and design concept reports
(DCR's) and provide preliminary pavement design sections and
appropriate materials design comments.

Primary Goals
and Objectives
|
The primary goals and objectives of Pavement Design Section are to:
- Provide a comprehensive Materials Pavement Design Reports are accurate,
timely, and cost effective in achieving management desired project
performance goals.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field of pavement design and
pavement testing and look for ways to improve the process ADOT uses to
design pavements.
- Provide pavements that are durable, smooth and within agreed to safety parameters.
- Provide pavements that are costs effective and of high quality.
- Actively participate in the design team and partnering process (design and construction).
- Encourage training and continuing education in pavement design and materials.
- Design pavements that achieve a high degree of customer satisfaction and are recognized nationally for high quality.

Organization
and Function
|
The Pavement Design Section consists of nine Design Engineers and
Technicians, one Clerical support person and the Section Head. This
eleven person organization's primary function is to design the best
pavements possible within the constraints of scope, schedule budget and
desired outcome, other functions include:
- Provide special reports as needed.
- Provide trouble shooting support of construction or maintenance pavement problems.
- Approve change orders involving the pavement structure.
- Provide expertise in claims or lawsuits involving pavements.
- Participate in State, Regional, National and international conferences and meetings on pavement design.
