West Sedona Lighting Project
State Route 89A Continuous Highway Lighting

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are installing a new highway lighting system along SR 89A in West Sedona (Dry Creek Road to Airport Road). ADOT and FHWA worked with the City of Sedona and the Sedona community between 2006 and 2010 to come to an agreement on the type of lighting system to be installed to address safety concerns accentuated by four nighttime pedestrian fatalities on the roadway. The City of Sedona asked ADOT to conduct a study following the fourth nighttime pedestrian fatality, which prompted a citizen petition asking for lighting to be installed to help prevent further nighttime incidents.

ADOT and FHWA allocated funding to the project based on ADOT's standard highway lighting system. The City of Sedona asked ADOT to look at options beyond standard highway lighting systems, as the City is considering additional investment to enhance the highway lighting design.
