ADOT winter storm update: Some roads now open
December 8, 2009
FLAGSTAFF—The Arizona Department of Transportation has now opened some highways this morning after yesterday’s blizzard pounded the state. The storm created blowing and drifting snow and icy roadways—conditions treacherous for drivers. ADOT’s top priority during this major winter storm is the safety of all travelers.
The following roadways are now open:
- Northbound I-17 from mileposts 299 to 340 (I-17 southbound is also open)
- Westbound I-40 is open from Winslow to US 93. Eastbound I-40 is open from Ash Fork to Winslow. Eastbound I-40 from US 93 to Ash Fork is still closed at this time.
- SR 260 is open in both directions in the Payson and Heber areas: Chains or four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
- Southbound SR 73 near Pinetop: Chains or four-wheel drive vehicles are required.
- Northbound and southbound SR 87 from Pine to Winslow.
US 180 is still closed in both directions north of Flagstaff. There is no estimated time for reopening this road.
All snowplow crews have been working to clear roadways for drivers. ADOT has used all of its available resources—plows, employees and snow removal materials—to get drivers on the roads again.
Drivers can get the latest information about highway restrictions and closures via ADOT’s Travel Information site at www.az511.gov or by calling 5-1-1.
ADOT urges drivers — especially those who rarely experience driving in snow — to visit the “Know Snow” Web page before enjoying the winter weather. “Know Snow” information is available online at www.azdot.gov/knowsnow or by calling 602.712.7355. Also available are travel tips, how to prepare your vehicle for the winter, phone numbers, weather terms, and ADOT’s snow-removal maps and plans.
