Humorous Speech Contest

Rod Collins won first place in the Fall Humorous Speech Competition!  He will be practicing and readying himself for the Area P1 Competition on September 30th and with any luck the Paiute Division Contest on October 15th.  Details are forthcoming but you’ll want to be there to support Rod since the higher one goes in this competition the funnier all the speeches become. It's good entertainment.  Tim Owens is runner up.

Mary Cook did an excellent job at chairing the Humorous Speech Contest and Shana Knox made sure that things ran smoothly as Chief Judge.  Khala from “As You Like it” provided her keen insights in evaluation as judge and delivered one of the best evaluations I’ve seen since I saw her as a contestant in the evaluation Area Competition last year.  Murari and Jamie took careful count of the votes.  Leigh kept good time.  Len and Manish provided treats and refreshments.  All in all, it was a very entertaining Competition and the upcoming evaluation competition in a couple of weeks promises to be entertaining – in a different sort of way.

Evaluation Speech Contest

Capitol Toastmasters held its first Evaluation Contest for as far back as anyone can remember in September! Competitors were Hemal Modi, Manish Shaw, and Tim Owens. They listened to and performed 2-3 minute evaluations on Jamie Lyon's speech about Motorcycles. Girgis and Shana were judges, Sarker counted the ballots, Murari performed the duty of timer, Laverne was the Sergeant at Arms, and Leigh was the Contest Chair. Jacki, an honored guest, was present to see the team in action~

Tim Owens and Manish Shaw tied, which meant Sarker had to complete some additional math to ensure we had a single winner (Tim pulled ahead by just a few points). Therefore, Tim will compete at the next level, Paiute Area, September 30. Should he be unavailable, Manish will go in his stead.

Special thanks to Hemal for participating. He is a new member and has not presented any speeches to the club. However, his participation in Table Topics over the past month may have lent him some comfort, or at least enough that he got up there and gave it the ol’ college try! THANK YOU, Hemal!

Girgis A. Girgis, a Capitol Toastmasters Alumni, has achieved through Competent Leader Bronze and Competent Communicator Gold and is the closest of anyone in the group to being a DTM (Distinguished Toastmasters).  We’re fortunate that he agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to be Chief Judge in Capitol Toastmasters first evaluation contest in a long time. Hemal Modi, a real go-getter, has only been with Capitol club for a few weeks and has already entered a competition.  We can see great things coming from this Toastmaster Left to Right: Manish Shah and Tim Owens are given a few minute in a room outside the meeting place to finalize their notes before giving their evaluations.
